He was later called up to South Korea’s national team, winning a gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, which allowed him to resolve his mandatory military service. This made him a highly recognized player both domestically and internationally. In 2019, he took his first step into overseas football with a transfer to Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada. He then moved on to Rubin Kazan in Russia, FC Seoul in Korea, Olympiacos in Greece, and most recently Crvena Zvezda in Serbia.
