Rare earth elements like neodymium and dysprosium are used in many high-tech products such as electric cars, wind turbines, and smartphones. Because these materials are important for energy and national security, countries are paying more attention to how they are used and controlled.

China produces more than 90% of the world’s rare earths. In 2010, China stopped sending rare earths to Japan after a political conflict. Japan quickly tried to find new suppliers and develop recycling technology. In 2020, during a trade fight with the U.S., China again thought about using rare earths as a way to push back. These events showed how countries can use important materials as tools in international politics.

Recently, China has had problems too. Some of its mines caused pollution, and it now buys more rare earths from other countries like Myanmar. Meanwhile, the U.S., Japan, and Korea are trying to find safer ways to get rare earths and new materials that can replace them.
